In 1981, Kawasaki claimed that the GPZ1100 was the quickest production
motorcycle available. By modern standards the GPZ looks like a civilized all
around, 'standard' style motorcycle, but when it was introduced it was regarded
as an all out sport bike. The concept utilized by Kawasaki was to take an
existing engine (from the KZ1000), modify for maximum performance, and put it in
a modern, light-weight chassis. The engine was not overly high tech, being a 2
valve per cylinder design, but Kawasaki did make use of fuel injection. In 1983
the GPZ1100 was given a makeover, with 4 valve heads amongst other improvements.
It was considerably more powerful, and benefited from a modified chassis and new
bodywork.
The introduction of the 1995 GPZ1100 was a surprise to the press. The machine
made use of a modified version of the engine used in the ZX11. The re-tune gave
the GPZ1100 even more low end grunt than the ZX11, with the same top end rush!
The engine was wrapped in a steel double cradle frame that didn't break any
technology barriers, but the whole package worked extremely well. Although the
bike initially seemed like a throwback, and a parts bin special, it truly was a
terrific machine, with great performance, solid handling, and good comfort
levels.
